Biolabelling With Quantum Dots
Labelling of biological molecules with gold nanoparticles has been carried out for over 30 years. More recently, there have been extensive efforts into the applications of magnetic or luminescent nanocrystals for biological labelling. We are collaborating with the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research on early detection using quantum dot based labels. A key challenge is ensuring that the quantum dots do not undergo non-specific binding to cells. We have developed surface coatings that minimize non-specific binding and stoichiometric conjugation to enzymes, proteins and polypeptides.

We have also developed a whispering gallery mode based detection system with attomole detection of unlabelled analytes. This is being developed into a microplate reader format. For more information contact Dr Edin Nuhiji.
