The world of the nanoparticle is indeed
small. In actual fact, these minute structures are only about a billionth of a
metre in size. This makes them rather difficult to see. Fortunately for us some
special types of nanoparticles, namely quantum dots, exhibit a very interesting
phenomenon, confinement. This quantum mechanical affect allows the quantum dots
to emit light of different colours depending on their size.
My current research interest involves
utilizing this property of quantum dots and fabricating novel optically active
nanostructures. Both polymeric and glass systems are being investigated with
specific emphasis on waveguides and lasers. Further investigations relate inter-dot
interactions in both solution and rigid systems (polymers and glasses). A more
fundamental picture of the electronic and kinetic properties of quantum dots will
be obtained from this facet of research.
By probing deeper into the electronic and
physical properties of these structures it is anticipated that an understanding
of how molecular systems gradually morph into their bulk crystalline
counterparts will become apparent.
